From machine data to managed performance
The questionOnce machines are connected, why do so many plants have dashboards but no measurable progress?
Why it is a leadership topic
plants equipped by TEEPTRAK in 30 countries TEEPTRAK data
production output improvement reported by manufacturers engaged in smart manufacturing [2]
the international KPI standard defining OEE (NF E60-182 in France) [1]
Raw data does not improve a line. What does is a KPI calculated the same way everywhere, downtime qualified by the right person at the right time, and a routine that turns the weekly Pareto into actions. OEE (overall equipment effectiveness, TRS in French) is the reference KPI for this: it combines availability, performance and quality of a production asset into one number. François Coulloudon shares what works, and what fails, from TEEPTRAK deployments in more than 450 plants.
What you will take away
- Calculating OEE correctly and comparably across lines and sites.
- Coding downtime so the Pareto points to causes, not symptoms.
- Setting up shop-floor routines that turn the KPI into action, from the daily huddle to the weekly review.
- Building clean, contextualised data, a prerequisite for any later AI project.
OEE in one calculation
- Planned time
- 8-hour shift = 480 min
- Downtime
- 60 min → availability = 420 / 480 = 87.5%
- Speed
- Ideal rate 1 part/min, 378 parts made in 420 min → performance = 378 / 420 = 90%
- Quality
- 370 good parts out of 378 → quality = 97.9%
- OEE
- 87.5% × 90% × 97.9% = 77.1%, i.e. 370 good parts × 1 min / 480 min
Teaching example. Quick check: OEE = good parts × ideal cycle time / planned production time.

FAQ
What is the difference between OEE, TEEP and OOE?
They relate useful time to different reference times: planned production time for OEE, operating time for OOE, calendar time for TEEP.
Do I need an MES to measure OEE in real time?
No. Non-intrusive sensors or a PLC connection are enough to collect machine states; what matters most is teams qualifying the downtime.
Is the talk a TEEPTRAK product demo?
No. It covers method: KPI definition, downtime coding, routines. The examples come from the shop floor.
